UPPDATERING: LivsCykel vill tacka alla som hjälpte till att göra projektet till en stor framgång. LivsCykel är ett projekt som görs av elever på gymnasieskolorna Spyken och Carl Adolph Agardhgymnasiet tillsammans med hjälp från Hållbart Universitet och projektets sponsorer, företag såväl som privatpersoner. Syftet är att samla in övergivna och oanvända cyklar och ge dem till människor i större behov av dem. Detta kommer ske genom att en container placeras ut på Kraftstorg (bakom Domkyrkan) i Lund där vi kommer samla in ca 120 sådana cyklar från främst privatpersoner. Vi kommer vara på plats från 5 maj, då 350.org anordnar sin årliga globala klimatmanifestation (i år kallad Connect the Dots), till den 26 maj. De två sista veckorna är vi en del av Lunds kommuns första hållbarhetsfestival, Planet Lund. Vi kommer finnas på plats vid containern kl 11–19 på helgerna, då vi även arrangerar olika evenemang, som cykelworkshops (se nedan) och musikframträdanden (se våra facebooksidor (här och här) under veckorna som kommer för mer info om dessa), och varje vardag kl 16–19.

Cyklarna kommer sen fraktas med fartyg till Sydafrika, där de tas omhand av Bicycle Empowerment Network. BEN är en nonprofit-NGO som i tio år har distribuerat donerade cyklar från alla världens hörn till människor som har störst nytta av dem samt skapat jobb för lokalbefolkningen genom att i containrarna öppna cykelaffärer runtom i Kapstaden och lära upp personal för dessa. BEN arbetar hårt för cykelsäkerhet och eko-mobilitet och anordnar cykelträningscenter. Hittills har de, tillsammans med cyklarna som strömmar in till dem, åstadkommit väldigt mycket för att ge människor tillgång till billig och hållbar transport som mottagare använder t.ex. för att ta sig till jobbet, skolbarn för att nå skolor de tidigare inte kunde och sjuksköterskor för att nå människor i behov av sjukvård som tidigare hade väldigt svårt att nå vårdcentraler och sjukhus. Vi tycker att BEN är en jättebra organisation som går väl ihop med vår livsåskådning och mål att förlänga cyklarnas livscykler och förbättra människors liv genom cyklar.
Problem vi vill tackla
I många länder (och särskilt i cykelstäder som Lund) tar vi ofta det för givet att vi omkring oss har mängder av cyklar, cykelleder och tillgång till detta hållbara transportsätt. Men för många människor i andra delar av världen är bristande tillgång på hållbara transportmöjligheter (som cyklar) ett stort problem. Cyklar har stor potential att adressera sociala problem som fattigdom, arbetslöshet, dålig tillgänglighet, övervikt samt segregering.
Eftersom vi cyklar relativt mycket i Sverige har vi också många övergivna och gamla cyklar som står oanvända i folks garage, på städernas gator eller i cykelställ. Många cyklar hamnar också på våra återvinningsstationer (som i Lund finns i Gunnesbo och Gastelyckan), vilket låter bra men är problematiskt dels eftersom de i de flesta fall kan återanvändas ganska enkelt och dels för att när de väl återvinns snarare nedcyklas (blir till material av sämre kvalitet och senare hamnar på tippen ändå) snarare än uppcyklas till material av samma höga kvalitet.
Vår lösning
Istället för att samla rost och spindelnät eller återvinnas på suboptimala sätt skulle vi vilja att dessa cyklar överlämnas till folk som verkligen skulle uppskatta dem, en sorts återanvändning och återvinning som inte bara ger tillgång till ett hållbart transportsätt utan också bredare social och ekonomisk nytta för individer. Fördelarna inkluderar hälsa genom motion, tillgång till utbildning och arbetsmöjligheter samt, delvis t som en direkt effekt, fattighetsbekämpning. En annan stor roll cyklar kan spela är förse människor med nya färdigheter och arbetsmöjligheter, ett slags bemyndigande, så att cykelmiraklet kan börja få ett eget liv på dessa platser.
I den FAQ som finns på vår hemsida adresserar vi invändningar man kan ha mot det här upplägget. Där kan du bl.a. läsa om att vi menar att du bör använda den (eventuellt efter reparation) ifall du har en cykel i Lund snarare än att ge den till oss, om varför LivsCykel inte ger upphov till ett ”b-waste”-problem och om varför projektets nettoeffekt på miljön enligt oss är högst positiv.
Men ta inte vårt ord för det, lyssna istället på en som varit med i tio år, medgrundaren och BEN:s verksamhetschef Andrew Wheeldon. I vår intervju, som du hittar här, berättar han vad BEN har uppnått, hur de bidrar till att det tungt kolberoende Sydafrika i framtiden kan bli klimatvänligare, vad som händer med cyklarna när de väl är på plats, hur de arbetar tillsammans med Kapstadens regering för att förbättra cyklisters säkerhet, m.m. Ett viktigt citat från intervjun angående att cyklarna vi skickar ner inte i dagsläget hämmar utan snarare stimulerar den inhemska cykelmarknaden är (100 sydafrikanska rand är ca 86 kr):
”There are very few utility commuter-style bikes in SA, as the traditional bicycle market is focused on racing and recreational road- and mountain-bikes. In a population of 50 million, an estimated 500,000 new bikes are imported each year, one in 100 bikes per person. However, very few of these, perhaps 5%, are for transport purposes. These new bikes range from the R800 cheap quality supermarket mountain bike to the R100,000 carbon road racing bike. Established bicycle shops do not wish to risk moving into or creating new bicycle markets – BEN is trying to create, or broaden, the bicycle commuter market. With a GDP of about R40,000 p.a. in SA, heavily skewed towards the 10% super-rich predominantly white business owners, and with close to 40% unemployment or under-employment, these bikes are out of the reach of many of the population, even at R800. However, a good quality R400 used refurbished bicycle goes a long way to re-dressing this inequality.”

Har du ingen cykel att ge bort men ändå vill hjälpa oss hjälpa BEN? Cykelworkshopsen håller vi för att vi helt enkelt bryr oss om cyklar och helst ser att de sköts om och ges kärlek där de redan finns idag (det är resterande cyklar vi vill skicka till Kapstaden!). Workshopsen kommer äga rum runt containern och ledas av professionella cykelexperter som ivrigt hjälper oss på sin egen fritid. Tanken är att vi vill lära oss själva och hjälpa andra i Lund att lära sig att på egen hand ta bättre hand om sina cyklar, för även om utbudet av cykelaffärer är stort i staden tror vi att många cyklar högst onödigt missköts. Om vi kunde förbättra gemene mans cykelfärdigheter tror vi att cykellivsstilen i Lund kan bli ännu bättre och ännu mer hållbar. Så alla är varmt välkomna att delta och lära sig om cykelteori, cykelns delar och hur dessa bör underhållas och repareras, och att DU kan göra detta själv i många fall (verktyg kommer finnas tillgängliga för alla att använda).
Vad vi vill göra sammanfattas enklast med LivsCykels syftesförklaring:
”Vi älskar cyklar. Vi vill att de ska leva så länge som möjligt. Vi älskar även att minska resursslöseri och vill därför återanvända oönskade cyklar så mycket som möjligt för att förlänga deras liv. Därför vill vi få alla, t.o.m. i cykelstaden Lund, att bry sig om sina cyklar mer. Men om de inte gör detta gör vi det åt dem – genom att skicka dem till Sydafrika. Vi siktar på att ge dessa cyklar till folk som bryr sig mycket om dem och som är i stort behov av dem, folk som t.ex. de som den framgångsrika sydafrikanska organisationen BEN arbetar med i bl.a. Kapstaden. För vi älskar cyklar och älskar vad de kan göra för människor runtom i världen!”
Med namnet LivsCykel menar vi att cykling är en livsstil och att vi ser cykeln som ett verktyg för livet, och det refererar till livscykelstänkande och att förlänga cyklarnas livscykler. Det handlar också om allas vår sammanlänkning med andra lokalsamhällen runtom i världen i vårt arbete för hållbar transport och minskade utsläpp av växthusgaser. Du kan också vara med i detta arbete!

”Bicycles are good for people. They bring health, mobility, independence and social cohesion. Bicycles are good for the environment. In my view, they are, quite simply, the greatest invention of all time.” Do you agree? In that case you should read on and learn about an exciting project taking place in Lund this May in which everyone can help out.
THIS ARTICLE IS NON-REDACTIONAL MATERIAL WHICH PANORAMA HAS GIVEN SPACE IN ORDER TO HELP THE PROJECT REACH OUT TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE IN LUND.
LivsCykel (”LifeCycle”) is a project by high school students from Spyken and Carl Adolph Agardhgymnasiet with help from Hållbart Universitet and the project’s sponsors, businesses as well as private persons. The purpose is to collect abandoned and unused bikes and give them to people in greater need of them in South Africa. This will be done by placing a container on Kraftstorg (behind the Cathedral) in Lund and there receive approximately 120 bikes, mainly from private persons. We will be on location from May 5, when 350.org coordinates its annual global climate manifestation (this year called Connect the Dots), until May 26. The last two weeks we will be a part of Lund municipality’s first sustainability festival, Planet Lund. We will be by the container 11 am to 7 pm on the weekends, when we will also arrange various activities such as bike workshops and music performances (watch our facebook pages, here and here in the weeks to come for more info on these), and every workday 4–7 pm.
If you have a bike to donate we and BEN would be eternally grateful for your kindness.
The bikes will then be shipped to South Africa, where they will be cared for by Bicycle Empowerment Network. BEN is a non-profit NGO that for ten years has been distributing donated bikes from all over the world to people in great need of them and they have also been creating jobs for local communities by turning the containers into bikeshops in various locations in Cape Town and training personnel for these. BEN is working hard for bike safety and eco-mobility and is arranging bike training centers. So far they, together with all the bikes coming their way, have achieved a lot by way of giving people access to cheap, sustainable transportation that for instance people use to get to work, schoolchildren use to reach schools they couldn’t before, and nurses use to reach people in need of medical care that previously had a very hard time getting to health centers and hospitals. We think that BEN is a great organization fits well with our life view and our goal of prolonging the lifecycles of bikes and enhancing the lives of people through bikes.
Problems we want to tackle
In many countries (and especially in bike cities such as Lund) we often take it for granted to have loads of bikes, bike paths, and access to this sustainable means of transportation. But for many people around the world lack of access to sustainable transportation (like bikes) is a big problem. Bikes have great potential at addressing social problems like poverty, unemployment, obesity, bad accessibility, and segregation.
Since we bike relatively much in Sweden we have many abandoned and old bikes standing unused in people’s garages, on city streets or in bike stands. Many bikes also end up at our recycling stations (in Lund at Gunnesbo and Gastelyckan), which sounds good but is problematic in part because they in most cases could be reused pretty easily and in part because when they are recycled they are mainly downcycled (into materials of less quality and later ending up on the waste pile anyhow) rather than upcycled into materials of the same high quality.
Our solution
Instead of gathering rust and spider webs or being recycled in suboptimal ways, we would like to hand these bikes over to people who would really appreciate them, a kind of reuse and recycling that not only gives access to sustainable transportation but also broader social end economic benefits for individuals. These include health through exercise, improved access to jobs and school, and, partly as a direct effect, poverty alleviation. Another big role these bikes can play is to give people new skills and job opportunities, a kind of empowerment, in order that the bike miracle can start grow life of its own in these places.
In the FAQ that can be seen on our website we address objections one might have against this setup. There you can read about why we say that if you have a bike here in Lund you should use it (maybe after a repair) here rather than give it to us, about why LivsCykel doesn’t create a “c-waste” problem, and about why the projects net environmental effect according to us is highly positive, among others
But don’t take our word for it, instead listen to someone who has been doing this for ten years, co-founder and managing director of BEN, Andrew Wheeldon. In our interview, which can be found here, he tells us what BEN has achieved how they contribute to making the heavily coal-dependent South Africa mote climate friendly in the future, what happens to the bikes once they arrive, how they work with the Cape Town government to enhance the safety of cyclists, among others. An important quote from the interview regarding that the bikes we send down don’t today inhibit but rather stimulates the domestic bike market is (100 South African Rand is approx. 86 SEK):

You don’t have a bike to donate but still want to help us help BEN? At the time of writing, we have from the sponsors we have so far collected around half of the money we need to raise in order to pay for the container, the shipping, and small costs – in other words, we have half the way still to go financially and would appreciate your help in this as well. On our Funded By Me-page you can donate as much or as little as you like to us. The money will go directly to ship the container. Our budget and how far we have come towards it can be seen on our website. All individuals who help us make the budget will get their names written on the container (if they like), where also all of our sponsors logos will be seen, plus a cool LivsCykel sticker as thanks. We would also greatly appreciate if you help us spread the word about LivsCykel. Maybe you have a friend/parent/teacher or know someone else who never uses their bike, maybe you’ve seen an abandoned bike somewhere that you can tell us about, or maybe you know of some company or organisation that might be interested in sponsoring us? We arrange the bike workshops because we simply care about bikes and would prefer to see them be cared for and given love where they already are today (it’s bikes not like these that we’re sending to Cape Town!). The workshops will be held around the container and be led by professionals who are eagerly volunteering their time. The thought is that we want to learn ourselves and help others in Lund to learn how to on your own take better care of your bike, because even though the supply of bikeshops in town is large, we believe that many bikes are mistreated highly unnecessarily. If we could improve general bike skills we think that the bike lifestyle in Lund can become even better and even more sustainable. So everyone are very welcome to participate and learn about bike theory, bike parts and how these should be maintained and repaired, and that YOU can do this by yourself in many cases (tools will be available for all to use).
What we would like to do is best summarised by our mission statement:
“We love bikes. We want them to live for as long as possible. We also love reducing waste. So, we want to re-use unwanted bikes as much as possible and in turn extend their lives. Therefore, we want everyone, even people in the bike city of Lund, to care more for their bikes. But if they won’t, we will do it for them – by sending them to South Africa. We aim to give their bikes to people who do care for them and who have a great need for the, people like those the successful South African organization Bicycle Empowerment Network (BEN), work with in Cape Town and beyond. Because we love bikes and what they can do for people all over the world!”
The name LivsCykel stands for the bike as a way – and means – of life, it refers to life cycle thinking and to extending the very life cycle of the bikes. It is also about our own awareness of our interconnectedness with other communities around the world as we all work together towards sustainable transportation and reduced global greenhouse gas emissions. You can also be a part of this work!
